Alpaca Manager Presentation No. 5

The final presentation on Sunday was arranged by Inca Alpacas near Dorchester. The owner (Tim Hey) had indicated he would get some others users to come along but had advised me earlier in the week that there was no interest! I'm not sure why this is but the Brits seem to be very reluctant to travel anywhere. In the event we were invited for lunch but then I got an email from Tim saying that, if we were in a rush, he was happy with the software so why not skip the visit and just carry on with what we were doing! Since we were only 30 minutes away when I got the message, we decided to pop in anyway.

We ended up having a quick visit and Tim (he's a Tasmanian and a BAS judge) showed us some of his animals. He has been breeding blacks for 20 years or so and has about 300 alpacas on his farm. In our walk around, we did manage to discuss some possible changes to my software to help him with his marketing so the visit wasn't a complete fizzer.

With more time on our hands, we headed off to visit Maiden Castle. This is an impressive Iron Age Hill fort (built about 4,000 years ago). It is absolutely amazing how much these 'primitive' people managed to to with just simple tools. I know we visited here back in the late seventies when we lived in London but I can't remember much about our visit then. The site is huge with many dirt ramparts and ditches surrounding the central village area. It is all just grassed over now with sheep grazing but the size takes your breath away.

By 4 o'clock we were feeling a bit peckish so headed to nearby Dorchester for 'lunch'. Most shops are closed on Sundays and some pubs close in the afternoon so we took a while to find somewhere to eat. In the end we found a nice gastro pub and had Fish and Chips for the first time. It was really good food.

Our next Airbnb was about an hour away (just past Southampton) so it was back to the car and we finally got there about 7pm. This place is very flash being a new house in a housing estate and hosted by two gay South Africans. They (Jason and Ian) were very welcoming and their place is modern and immaculately clean with all mod-cons. They went to bed early because Ian commutes to London - two hours each way and he has to get up at 5:15am! We wandered off to the local pub for a couple of pints/wines and a snack before returning at around 10pm to hit the sack.
