Yorkshire Air Museum

Today we visited the Yorkshire Air Museum at Elvington (to the east of York).

Getting there was fun because I tried out the sport-mode in the Rental Car. This changes it from a sedate, almost gutless, commuter vehicle into a racy beast. Just taking off in first gear the engine noise was different and the thing just wanted to rev up high. Needless to say I planted boot and we were zinging along the lanes like a mad thing. Miriam had visions of us ending up like T E Lawrence on his motorbike and crashing badly! However, I had everything under control, but it was fun.

The RAF Elvington site was a real treat. This was a base for Halifax bombers and the site has had all the old buildings restored beautifully. You almost expect a call to 'scramble' with loads of dashing pilots running for their aircraft. In the event we just had good old wartime songs playing over the tannoy. There were many old and relatively new RAF planes there but only replica Spitfire and Hurricane aircraft. The Victor K2 ('Lusty Lindy') in the photo below looked very impressive. There were doing some work on it so I'm not sure if is still in flying condition.

After a bite to eat, we headed off to York for the latter part of the afternoon.
