RAF Museum at Cosford

Thursday and we had to leave and drive to our next Airbnb at Upper Oddington in the Cotswolds for one night. It was a fairly long driving day but we decided we could fit in some sight-seeing before heading south. The problem was, we both wanted to see different things and only had time for one of them.

The solution was to do both, but separately! I dropped Miriam off at Attingham so she could visit this stately home (more in the next Blog post) while I drove the 20 miles or so to Cosford to visit the RAF Museum.

Needless to say, the museum had a lot of planes to view which I'm sure everyone reading this is not the slightest bit interested in. Here's a photo anyway:

Vulcan Bomber
The Vulcan bomber (not this actual one) was the aircraft which did a low pass at Rongatai Airport when it opened (1959?) and the pilot decided to actually do a touch-and-go. Unfortunately, he came in too low and bashed the undercarriage into the ground before the runway seriously damaging it. He then had to divert to Ohakea and do an emergency landing on foam for repairs! Very embarrassing. This is a huge aircaraft and this is all I could fit in given that it was in a hangar with many other aircraft.

There were two other hangars also full of different aircraft types but, sadly, one of them was closed today (this had the Hurricane and Spitfire). They also had lots of videos to watch on international politics (of war), the cold war, the space race etc. etc. but a couple of hours was not enough time to see everything. Many visits required I think - good thing it was free!

After a quick sandwich and coffee in the cafe it was back to collect Miriam and move on.
